Finding your location

To show you the right timings, FindStarlink needs to know where you'll be watching from. There are three ways to set your location.

Search by name

  1. Pick your Country from the dropdown.
  2. Start typing your place in the Place box. After the first 2 characters, up to 5 matching places appear - tap one to use it.
  3. If nothing is found, you'll see "Sorry, nothing found. Please check the name!" along with an option to "put your coordinates" instead.

Your recently used places are remembered - focus the Place box to see a short Recent list and pick one with a single tap.

Why isn't my city listed?

To keep the download size of the city list manageable, only places with a population over 15,000 are included - including every city in the world would make the site massive to download, and it wouldn't load well in remote/rural locations.

Not to worry: you can select any city within 80 km/50 miles of you, and the timing predictions will be the same within 80 km/50 miles of a location. If your place isn't listed, you can also enter your coordinates directly.

Search by coordinates

Switch to the By coordinates tab and enter your position as degrees, choosing North or South for latitude and East or West for longitude. This is handy if your place isn't in the list, or if you're somewhere remote (a dark field is the best place to watch, after all!).

Auto-detect my location

If you haven't searched for a place yet, FindStarlink tries to locate you automatically when you first open it, using a quick lookup of your approximate location from your IP address.

On your first visit, your location is guessed from your IP address. If that isn't enough, the site then asks your browser for your precise location.

Your location is guessed from your IP address, and the app then uses your device's location to fine-tune it.

When this asks for permission, allowing it fills in your location automatically - you can always change it afterwards by searching or entering coordinates.
